-IN-DEPTH BIO-
CarOlé Tachíria Acuña Flamenco is an actor, the fifth generation flamenco & Spanish dancer in a Gitano family legacy, contemporary/ballet/jazz/partner dancer, model, stand-up comedian, singer, author, choreographer, flamencologist, director. Her work can be seen in film, television, streaming, commercials, theatres, books, as well as other mediums. She has done voice over work and percussive recordings for Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC.
A next generation artist, millennial, BIPOC, mixed race, Yaqui, Afro-Latina/e, Gitana, Sephardic Jewish, two spirit, feminist, survivor of rape, domestic violence, cancer and now a thriver; Ms. Flamenco is here to help people through her work. She turned professional at fourteen and has over fifteen years of experience. She has been named the “Top flamenco dancer in America” by the So You Think You Can Dance judges, is a Meisner Film Festival Best Actress Winner, Mexico City Fashion Film Festival Best Actress nominee, is one of the featured professionals as “Living the Dream” & named a “Flamenco Star” by Sunset Magazine, is an Isadora Duncan Dance Award elite nominee in individual performance, named “One of the funniest stand-up comedians in the Bay Area” by the Contra Costa Times. She was one of the first originally chosen artists by Jennifer Lopez to be in “¡Que Viva! The Chosen”. While being multifaceted, she respects the intricacies of each discipline, has studied each one vigorously, is growth oriented, continuously evolving. Her chosen genres are specific to her unique artistic vision and it shows in her work. The profoundly diverse and complex way of life, art-form, culture that is flamenco is at the core of all of it; which she finds the relation to in many aspects of life.
Having grown up in a flamenco and Spanish dance house hold, Ms. Flamenco’s mother, Flamenco and Spanish dance legend, Carolina Lugo and grandmother taught her dance while various international artists came to live and collaborate with shows. Starting her training in ballet at the age of three, Ms. Flamenco balanced ballet, Spanish dance, flamenco and school before turning professional at fourteen years of age with Rosa Montoya. At 16, she started intensively studying modern and contemporary dance with Cheryl Chaddick and Robert Moses, she joined Ms. Lugo’s company, Brisas de España (later named Ballet Flamenco). Ms. Flamenco then created her own company at age 18 in Sevilla, Spain, Acuña Danza Teatro which is now called CarOlé Flamenco’s FLAMENCO SPANISH DANCE THEATRE of AMÉRICA. She also started dancing/choreographing with many other companies, prominent figures and in films: some are listed below.
With the humble honor of being the flamenco protégé of Pepa Montes in Sevilla, Spain, Ms. Flamenco has been living and intensively training every two years since she was invited during a dance tour when she was eighteen. This is the prestigious school from Matilde Coral and Pastora Imperio. She has also studied with many more flamenco greats in Spain: El Torómbo, Farruquito, Esperanza Fernández, Concha Vargas, Lola Montes, Cristian Almodóvar, Miguel Betanzos, Antonio Vargas to name a few. She dances Spanish contemporary dance there as well.
There was always a love for acting, singing, creating plays, and Ms. Flamenco was nominated the class clown a couple of times in school, while simultaneously being on the honor role and nominated the “teacher’s pet”. So, becoming an actor, singer and comedian seemed like a good fit as well (flamenco can also contain these elements at times). So she also became a professional actor, singer and comedian at the age of twenty two, after she went through intensive training with various world class artists. She later also went to American Conservatory Theatre and San Francisco State University to receive a degree in Dance/Theatre with a dance base in modern/contemporary dance with the Horton technique. Ms. Flamenco also studied with Sanford Meisner’s last teaching protege, in an intensive two year acting program. She went on, to be in the professional Meisner actor’s studio for five years, did one year of private coaching, on how to teach the Meisner technique. With this specific focused background, she performs, writes and directs musical theatre productions with her company, and as a guest artist. She is a flamencologist, being a Masters of Fine Arts Candidate in Dance/Theatre with a focus on Flamenco at Saint Mary’s College of California. She has written a children’s book, a book of poems, one act plays, full length plays, commercial scripts, stand-up comedy routines, screenplays, her one person show.
Ms. CarOlé Flamenco has performed as a soloist for: Shanghai Opera, Skywalker Ranch, San Francisco Symphony, Skywalker Sound, The Punchline in San Francisco & Sacramento, California Symphony, Golden Gate Opera, Mendocino Symphony, Chicago Models, Caminos Flamencos, VitaClay, Oregon Flamenco, Peninsula Symphony, Caroline’s New York, San Jose Improv, Oakland Ballet, New York Brooklyn Church, The Dungeon of San Francisco, Herbst Theatre, New Conservatory Theatre, Venetto Quartet, Dos Hermanas Peña, So You Think You Can Dance, San Francisco City Hall, Porto Theatre, British Colombia Theatre, Katiedid Dance Company, Urban Jazz Dance Company, Montes Dance Company, Benicia Ballet, Encore Gymnastics, Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, Blues Los Angeles, Rooster T. Feathers, The Function Comedy Club, to name a few.
